Health Effects from Child Abuse

Some Types of Child Abuse; Causing Brain Structure Changes in Women and Heart Attacks for Men

June 02, 2013

We all know, or should know, that child abuse can create an unhealthy adult. Studies are increasing to discover the long-term outcomes of abuse. More studies are being done to determine if there are any effects due to gender.

Today, ScienceDaily released an article about the finding of a new study that was completed by an international team of researchers regarding the structure of the brain as a consequence to forms of child abuse.

You can review the results of the study in the June 1st, 2013 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. Through the use of MRI's, the study shows that a particular part of the brain, the cortex, was thinner than the normal size of the brain section. This is where the genitalia representation in the brain is located. These results also revealed that with sexual abuse, the section of the brain called the "somatosensory cortex", was thinner. In women who suffered from emotional abuse as a child, the cerebral cortex was thinner. This is where their emotions are regulated, along with, self-evaluation and self-awareness.

Even though women are at a higher risk rate for heart attacks after suffering from a form of abuse, men who have been sexually abused as a child, can grow up to be at a higher rate of risk for a heart attack, 3 times more at risk. An unhealthy lifestyle of drinking and smoking can increase those risks even higher. Much of these risks could be a factor of "lack of support" after such abuse. There is much more support out there available out there to women, for such abuses, then there are available to men. This leads them to deal with it on their own and can take a toll on their health.

Good Advice: Stop drinking, Stop smoking, Start talking with someone for support and Take Care of Yourself.
